10 Alternate Sites to See in Vienna, Austria

1. Augarten –

Nestled in the second district of Vienna, this historic public park is home to massive WWII anti-aircraft defense towers that were built to protect the city from allied forces. Contrary to historical events, the park is a peaceful and quiet space perfect for a picnic during warmer weather. Located within the park area is also a well-known porcelain factory.

2. Spittelberg

This little village-like street has cobblestone walkways, small houses, and organic ivy taking over building fronts. Spittelberg is located in the 7th district, which has more of a artsy-hipster feel with great restaurants and unique boutiques. If you happen to be in Vienna while the Christmas Markets are around, be sure to head to Spittelberg for a wonderful local Christmas Market!

3. Donauinsel

A small island in the Danube River and the perfect escape from the city. Walk, bike, run, skate, or enjoy a picnic along the beautiful river. In the summer time you will find locals taking a dip or sunbathing (sometimes naked) on small man-made beaches.

4. Heuriger (Wine Taverns) in Grinzing

Heuriger means “of this year,” which refers to the wine made within the year. Grinzing is a suburb located out in the 19th district, and looks and feels like a small town in Europe. Rows of restaurants and heurigen line the streets, and paths split from the main road up into the Vienna Woods. On our first time out to Grinzing we took public transport and hiked our way around the Vienna Woods and came upon various wineries!

Hike up and drink some well-deserved Zweigelt (Austrian red wine) while nibbling on cheese and pastries. Take in some fresh air, a view of the city, and rows and rows of grapes you can pick AND eat straight from the vines!

*Notable Wineries: Cobenzl Winery, Buschenschank Uhler, Heuriger Schöll,

5. Naschmarkt Flea Market on Saturdays

Russell and I have found ourselves at this flea market a few times rummaging through tables and tables of old junk. Each time we find new hidden gems! Think old china, signs, books, postcards, WWII memorabilia, and much more.

There are lots of local flea markets around Vienna on Saturdays, but we love Naschmarkt because we usually go to the food market afterwards! Happy Hunting!!

6. Volksgarten Club

We went to this glitter-shooting, go-go dancer club and had an absolute blast!! The club doesn’t even open until 11PM, so we actually had to nap and drink coffee before going out because we’re old people. Dance among confetti, balloons, and champagne to a mix of today’s hits and some techno.

Hours:

Thursday: 7PM – 4 AM

Friday: 11 PM – 6 AM

Saturday: 11 PM – 6 AM

*Entrance fee varies

7. Ferstel Passage

A hidden passage right in the middle of the first district. Enjoy a stroll through the architectural jewel and stop for local wine tastings, chocolate, and other small shops.

8. Griechengasse

A quaint alley similar to Spittelberg to explore by foot. Located on Griechengasse is Griechenbeisl, which is one of Vienna’s oldest inns. Famous figures such as Beethoven, Mark Twain, and Strauss came to eat, drink, and congregate in this historical inn! Reservations are recommended.

9. Schloss Wilhelminenberg

Used to be a palace in the 20th century, but has now been converted into a four-star hotel. I added this to the list because there are hiking trails leading from the hotel, plenty of space for kids to run around, and sitting up on a hill offers some great views of Vienna. During the holiday season, there is a small Advent Christmas market located behind the hotel. Watching the sunset while sipping on glühwein provides an alternative Christmas market experience. In the summer the palace would be a great place to lay out a blanket for a picnic.

10. Kahlenberg

A hill located on the outskirts of the city, the Kahlenberg is located in the Vienna Woods and is accessible by hiking or by public transportation. Situated at the top is a viewing tower, cafe, and restaurant. We have not made it to Kahlenberg yet, but it is rumored to have the best view of the city and beyond. Surrounding Kahlenberg are plenty of hiking trails to add some more adventure to the trip.
