Warning: Munich on Christmas

Warning: Munich on Christmas

We took a train from Prague to Munich on Christmas day. Unfortunately we made the mistake of only planning on staying in Munich on Christmas and the day after… ROOKIE MISTAKE. Everything was closed with the exception of the famous Hofbrahaus and Starbucks of course.

What we did find out was that Munich is a great hub to hit some other cities. We ended up taking a whole day to drive and see the Neuschwanstein Castle. Munich is within in an hour drive to Austria and Switzerland. You could probably do Munich in a day, and head to another country. We met a couple who was only passing through and was staying in Munich for 12 hours.

Renting a car is super easy and cheap in Munich. They drive on the correct side of the road, and the roads are easy to navigate. We used Eurocar, and ended up with and Audi A5. However, if you don’t know how to drive manual- be sure to ask for an automatic vehicle!!

We went to the Hofbrauhaus both days for lunch and dinner. Those of you who don’t know what the Hofbrauhaus is, it is a beer house where they have a band playing, people passing around pretzels, and giant beer steins. We were those tourists who stood in the front waiting for a table until we realized the rule is SEAT YOURSELVES! The place is packed, so you cannot be shy and ask if you can have a seat in any crevice you can find.

However, once you get seated you have to order a pretzel with obatz cheese and a Weissbier (recommended by one of my best friends who lived in Munich for a little). She didn’t tell me that the obatz cheese was $7, but it was worth every dollar.

I think Munich is also better in the summer. We were told that their summer beer gardens are an amazing experience- so we will be planning a trip back!
